Initially deployed against Chinese forces, it proved to be too slow to hold up against the fighter aircraft of the other Allied powers. This 1/144 scale Ki-46 kit was initially released by Imai in 1973. Imai reissued this kit several times.

My 3D Model of the Mitsubishi Ki-46-2 and Ki-46-3 Dinah - Japanese WW2 Reconnaissance Fighter. All part of my Series of Historic Aircraft (1914 to 1974) I have been creating over the last few years. The full range of my builds can be found at my Website, the current count is about 280 planes, although more models are added on a weekly basis.

Some Ki-46-IIs were fitted with a radio compass for long range navigation, with such machines identifiable by a teardrop-shaped directional antenna fairing on a short pylon between the front and back cockpits. The Ki-46 was designed to replace the Mitsubishi Ki-15 'Babs', a reconnaissance aircraft that entered service in May 1937.Although the Ki-15 was a successful design it was already clear that it was not fast enough to elude the new generation of monoplane fighters, and so in 1937 officers from the Technical Branch of the Koku Hombu (Japanese Air Army Air Force HQ) began work on a specification A few Ki-46-IIIb assault aircraft, devel-oped from the intercepter, were built, and four Ki-46-IV high-altitude prototypes during 1943 & 44, powered by 1,100 hp / 1119kW (at 33,465 ft / 10,200 m) Mitsubishi Ha-112-Ru supercharged engines, were tested from February 1944 onwards.
